Far East Asia
In China it may be a languid cruise down the Yangtze River, gaining access to one of the many Chinese Buddhist, Confucian, and Taoist temples that dot the landscape, or touring the Forbidden City in Beijing. And of course there's always The Great Wall of China. South Korea treasures are equally worth the effort, including Mount Songnisan, home of Korea's tallest Buddha, or Mount Soraksan, which boasts stunning views of both mountain and sea. When travelling in Japan the smaller islands off the mainland proffer excellent scuba diving, snorkelling, and surfing, a decidedly different option to the bustling modernity of Tokyo. Mongolia may be a hearty welcome to Far East Asia, a horseback trek through the seemingly limitless steppe, kayaking on the Khövsgöl Nuur, or a trek through the Gobi Desert are all good ways to start off your adventure.
South East Asia
Safaris through the wildlife refuges of India showcase the area's astounding range of indigenous creatures: tigers, elephants, monkeys, pythons, and peacocks, to name but a few. Meanwhile, those with their heads in the clouds, so to speak, flock to the Himalayas of Nepal, which are most famous for the towering pinnacle of Mount Everest but most alluring for the warmth and spirituality of the people you'll meet as you trek beneath 20,000-foot peaks and into their remote villages. Further south and east, the opportunities are no less grand--your options range from exploring the hills of Thailand on the back of an elephant to diving the clear waters off the coast of Malaysia to going back in time to visit the Stone Age tribes of Indonesia Irian Jaya.
